Back at it again MasterChef
Just when I think I’m done with MasterChef, it drags me back in again.
A couple of years ago I was going to bow out with the old judges. Pre-empting a mass exit, the first season with Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen was a ‘Back to Win’ themed season. This saw the new faces of the judges made comfortable with old favourites of seasons gone past. Well, the strategy worked, and I was back in there again.
The second season returned to the regular format of the best home cooks but mixed up what was happening when. Or maybe this happened earlier. I can’t remember. This season also saw the impact of Coronavirus with a lot of chefs appearing virtually via a huge vertical screen, so they appear to be standing next to the judges. Flawless. Justin won. Let’s move on. I did however find that the season dragged. Maybe life was dragging due to Covid. The ratings appeared to drag too.
So that was it for me. And I have managed to stay strong avoiding Celebrity MasterChef but then, Channel 10 released their show line-up for next year and MasterChef have managed to twist it just enough to pique my interest again. Next year will see Foodies VS Favourites. So far it has been announced the show will start after Easter and feature Julie Goodwin (the winner of the first season and also the face of Glad) and Sarah Todd. The latter confused me because I wasn’t aware she was so popular but good on her.
What are we to take from this? I don’t know but I do feel like it’s a good study in how to keep things exciting for the audience.
Likewise CSI: Vegas. They want you to know it’s a sequel, not a reboot. Which I understand for two reasons. I’m obsessed and will listen to anything they say, and I’ve watched it and it is a sequel. Not as much of the old cast are back but that’s probably good for the new characters because it’s a sequel not a reboot. I knew the main character was going to be back because, well, the internet but when I saw him I made a noise that was a gasp but also like a bubble of excitement and then I grinned like an idiot for ages. So yeah, am totally chill about the sequel not a reboot thing.
Another excellent sequel is Gilmore Girls: A Year in The Life and I preferred the second season of Fargo to the first. This isn’t a discussion if originals or sequels are better because I don’t think there’s a hard and fast rule for either. And I just don’t imagine I will ever love the CSI sequel (not a reboot) more than the original. But I didn’t think I’d be still watching MasterChef.
I’m saying this to appear balanced, but I really can’t picture loving the CSI sequel more than the original.
Anyway, I’m going to stop now because I keep picking up my phone to look at the Instagram accounts of celebrities for no apparent reason. The mind wanted to check out what Reese Witherspoon was up to… would love to hear of people’s favourite sequels, reboots and if you’ll be watching MasterChef.
