I have vivid memories of the first time I watched a Louis Theroux documentary. It was a Saturday night. It felt late but I was young so it could have been 9:30, 10:30 or 11:30. The episode was Louis and the Brothel, 2003 documentary in which Louis Theroux spent some time, as the name suggests at a brothel. After that Louis disappeared from my life for a bit simply due to the fact his documentaries were really hard to find and take ages to be released in Australia. The former is no longer an issue as his entire catalogue is on Stan, and lately I have been rewatching one every night or so (in tandem with a Stacey Dooley). I couldn’t even tell you my favourites because I’m just a fan.
Running Point (Netflix) was a delightful surprise in my life. It’s really funny and I just wish there were more episodes. It strikes a good balance of having weight without taking itself too seriously. I love the writing.
I read a book! It’s been a while. I reread The Monogram Murders, a Poirot written by Sophie Hannah (an excellent mystery writer in her own right) who has been given the privilege of writing stories featuring the iconic character. The style and vibe are like the Christie originals but you can tell they’re written today (in a good way). Mystery books blow my mind, I can’t wrap my head around how these writers can tell the kind of stories that drop hints for the audience without giving anything away.
Speaking of reading, not to brag, but a while ago I got to read my friend Ash’s book, Love On The Air. And now it’s out in actual book shops which is so cool. It’s a romcom set in the radio industry of Australia and it’s funny with some very engaging characters. It’s one of those books that you read and your heart’s warm.
Now.
Sinners.
I got goosebumps, I cried, I laughed, I sat there completely riveted. On its surface it’s an amazing vampire film set in the 30s, but we all know it’s so much more than that. There are so many careful and clever references to experiences of the black community and notable cultural moments through metaphor and events in the film. I loved the shootout at the end.
I don’t want them to touch it. No, prequel/sequel/spin off. If you watch it make sure you stay as the credits roll.
Okay your turn, what have you been consuming?
Thanks Louise!
I’ve never been tempted by those books but I am going to see if they’re available at the library x
Did you watch the latest Louis Theroux docu about Israeli settlements? I hadn't watch any of his focus in a while but clips from this one kept making rounds online so we decided to check it out with my partner. It's a hot topic but the docu was really interesting.
