Patience
‘Patience is a virtue I just don’t have’ used to be my MSN username. I saw it on some Mimco branding and pinched it for another purpose. I’ve always liked punchy lines in all their forms, which has led go a desire to buy a chair that says ‘you’re going to want to sit down for this’ and the want to get tattoos (or at the very least stickers) of many sharp sentences.
However, I digress. Today I wanted to talk about patience.
I often think of my previous MSN username not to bask in its glory but to think about whether I am in fact a patient person or not, and I feel like in our want now, have now society my patience doesn’t get tested all too often. This often leads to buying something before I have had the chance to process, or bingeing something before I’ve had the chance to take each episode in.
However, releasing shows weekly, or even biweekly seems to be more common as streaming services are unable to produce content at a rate which quenches our desire for said media product. So instead of speeding up the process, they are slowing it down. I am okay with this in theory, and would say I encourage it, but this weekend I hit a bit of a roadblock.
This week, (I am writing this on the first day of 2022) I started watching Our Beloved Summer, a K Drama on Netflix. Two episodes are being released each week (one Tuesday and another Wednesday). By the time I started watching, eight episodes (so half of the first season) had been released. I watched them in two or three days and then had to hit the brakes. Now I am sitting in limbo waiting for the next episodes to be released. I will wait till Wednesday so I can watch two in a row but don’t like the idea of waiting a month if there are episodes sitting there.
Disney seems to do the weekly drop with many of its major shows. Both Dopesick and Only Murders in the Building follow this format. The key difference is that I started these from the beginning, only watching one episode at a time as opposed to having to change tact halfway through. I am at the age where I watched shows as they were released for most of my life, but I have become spoilt and greedy, and my expectations have changed dramatically.
A few days have passed since I wrote the above paragraphs, and the latest episode of Our Beloved Summeris out. But I am waiting till tomorrow to watch it because then another new episode will be out (they are releasing two episodes a week, a day a part) and I can watch both of them in a row hopefully with takeout. So in order to distract myself I have watched Season 6 of Queer Eye, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Spiderman Far From Home. I have also made lots of hot chocolates and am about to clean out the cupboard in the spare room.
It’ll be worth the wait.
