Some More Media Things
HOT GIRL SIDE TABLE
Do you have a hot girl side table? I was completely confused by the hot girl thing but judging from the linked article it essentially means an authentic curation of your things, those that are aesthetically pleasing and those which aren’t like coffee cups. But this translates to life like you can be awesome and onto it and also a bit shit. So normal. Although, the culmination of things is still very good-looking, judging by the examples. I am obsessed with my bedside table. The size isn’t very practical in its surface area, but it has three compartments and looks like a spaceship. On top is a pile of books because I rotate books these days. I don’t know if it’s hot girl, more boring girl, or Virgo girl.
ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING
The season finale happened and set up Season 2. I loved it. I love the whole season. I don’t have much else to say because I don’t want to spoil it for people as its just come out and I am still in that phase where I think it’s too early to talk about the ending. Next week I won’t be feeling like that.
TEACHING MEDIA
Teaching media is wild because it changes all the time, but the principles and the outcomes essentially stay the same. I mean its wild in the sense that you are dealing with an ever-evolving thing, that has a mind of its own. The students have their own relationship with the media, belief systems and preferences which you need to take into account. And parallel to this you are dealing with the codes and conventions (which are essentially) the building blocks of a media product. So even though their intended function is universal, the message received may not be. Even though I love it, sometimes I find it very hard to keep up.
JANE EYRE AND JOAN DIDION
I am reading Joan Didion for the first time. I ordered Let Me Tell You What I Mean a collection of twelve pieces from her fifty year career. I love reading collections of writing from an author because you can see how their writing has developed. They also tend to show the amazing way writers can articulate their observations. Now, Jane Eyre. I don’t think I’ve read much 19th century literature before. I’m enjoying it. I tried to read Wuthering Heights recently but couldn’t make a dint. I was so confused. A positive about this book is that it’s really slowing down my reading.
FREEDOM DAY
Say what you will about lockdown, it has produced some excellent content. Sooshi Mango and Jeff van de Zandt have kept me laughing on Instagram. So many funny things and I can’t even remember where they come from, just that I sometimes think about them and laugh. I saw a tweet the other day in which a person stated that they would be happy for TV and movies to never reference Covid. I’m currently watching Morning Wars on Apple and like the fact it’s mentioned. I don’t think I need it in everything but if media reflects the society it’s created in, I feel like it should be shown one way or another. Even if someone makes a behind the scenes documentary or something. I’m not sure, clearly that person won’t be me.
HOMETOWN CHA-CHA-CHA
Squid Game was my gateway drug to K-Dramas and here we are. Although my latest obsession Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha is very, very different. It’s about a dentist who sets up a clinic in a seaside town and falls in love (I’m assuming, I’m only up to episode 5…). It’s so nice and I watch it smiling like a Cheshire Cat.
