My life looks nothing like I thought it would. I don’t mean to suggest that it’s worse, or even better. It’s just different. As a child who grew up on Disney, my expectations were very simple. I would find a man, have children and, well the rest is very blurry. Games as a child consisted of Barbie, ‘Mechanics’, where we would sit in the car and fill out invoice books at a desk in the garage as well as David Jones. I’ve been a capitalist from a very early age. There was Meccano and some sports in the yard, but the latter only made up a very small portion. Why would I play cricket outside when I could watch It Takes Two with The Olsen Twins inside?
You're comment about women having to buy "The Right Things" got me thinking, and thinking always leads me to annoyance.
Now that I look at it, any act of indulgence or self-care for a female is criticised if it is not for the benefit of others, specifically children and men. This, is (pardon my language) bullshit. Whilst this generation is one that is moving away from stereotypes, and more importantly advocating the importance of self-care and setting boundaries, we of course carry bias's and opinions that we have grown up with. This idea that women are the big money spenders on useless things is absurd. HELLO?!?!?! The richest people in the world are men. Elon Musk just bought a fucking social media app for 44 BILLION dollars, Bezos spent god knows how much money on a luxury leisure space ship. Honest to god fuck off with this idea that women leech off men to pay for unnecessary things. Do these billionaires not make their profit from exploiting millions of working class people who can barely pay for basic healthcare?
Even then, there has been this craze of finding men attractive for taking their kids to school, doing their daughters hair, reading books???? Oh, you're doing the bare minimum as a parent? Good for you. Honestly, we have been raised with the idea that women are materialistic, money hungry and more, even if they are doing the same things men are (and often more). No one will blink an eye over a man decking out his dream man cave, but a woman buying herself a nice piece of clothing to help her feel more like herself again? (after having her identity erased to make room for "The Mother" "The Wife" stereotype) I mean how dare she. Let people enjoy things that aren't at the expense of others!
